The phrase “All that Glitters is not Gold” perfect fits on Oscar winner George Clooney’s latest crime drama ‘THE AMERICAN’.Having given a rocking performance in his last film ‘UP IN THE AIR‘ , Clooney was expected to blow you all over again. Sadly, ‘THE AMERICAN’ is by far this year’s biggest disappointment .

Storyline: Jack (George Clooney) is a master craftsman assassin . When a job in Sweden ends more harshly than expected for this American abroad, he vows to his contact Larry, his agent, that his next assignment will be his last. Jack reports to the Italian countryside, where he holes up in a small town and relishes being away from death for a spell. The assignment, as specified by a Belgian woman, Mathilde, is in the offing as a weapon is constructed. Surprising himself, Jack seeks out the friendship of local priest Father Benedetto and pursues romance with local woman Clara. But by stepping out of the shadows, Jack may be tempting fate. Will Jack complete his job and still survive?

10 mins into the movie, Jack kills a women with whom he was making love few moments a ago. Nobody knows or tells why he did that? Surprisingly even Clooney’s character Jack wonders why he did that… Hilarious? NO, it’s irritating!

Director Anton Corbijn has tried to make ‘THE AMERICAN’  a commercial flick by adding lots of hot girls and sleazy love making scenes, maybe he forgot to recheck the script he was working with.

The biggest problem with ‘THE AMERICAN’ is that nothing about Jack’s past life and how he became an assassin is shown. The links are missing throughout the film! Clooney is a good actor, no doubts about that! But the story of this film doesn’t suit him.

The only saving grace for the film is the tender relationship between Jack and the local priest of the town where he hides. Wish the director had put more of their scenes together.

The girls in the film are just showpieces. They look stunning, but hardly know the ‘A’ of Acting . You feel like laughing whenever the girls get emotional or romantic. Nonsense!

Technical the film is fine. The beauty of Italian landscape is captured nicely! Screenplay has lots of potholes. In short, faulty storyline is the biggest culprit.

• George Clooney’s gun making skills .. Trust me! There is nothing else to watch

Verdict: Watch it if you are a big fan of George Clooney… else avoid it. I’m Heartbroken !
